A quick spot of cleaning

16 May 2026

My original plan was to not do anything to the car this weekend as it’s being picked up on Monday, but because the weather was so nice today, I decided now would be a perfect time to do some little cleaning jobs here and there.

On the list that I wanted to try and get sorted in preparation for the MOT were a full set of new wiper blades. The only thing is, I didn’t want the garage putting new blades on, and I like to be particular about the wiper blades. The only type of blades I’d ever buy are Bosch AeroTwin (the flappy flat kind).

So it was off to Halfords for a complete set (front and rear), a very worth while investment in my eyes! Oh, for those reading looking for good recommendations, these wipers combined with the ‘rain repellent’ ready mixed screen wash from all BP petrol garages, is another thing I’d say is an absolute must! I was amazed at how well this works… it does exactly what it says on the… bottle!

Last weekend I made a start going round cleaning with some anti-bac wipes, and one of the things I wanted to sort out was the fuel cap (if you remember how it looked a few weeks ago!). Here’s something to remind you…

If there’s nothing I like better, it’s a sit down, some quiet time alone, and giving things a good clean. I have to say, I’m rather pleased with the result too if I may say so myself!

Another thing whilst walking around the car and finding things to clean, although I’m not worried about the interior just yet, I’ll wait until I’m driving it before I do that. Because most of the time I’ve spent on this car has been up with the bonnet up, I wanted to see just how much I could make this look a bit nicer (rather than going the whole way and replacing most of the engine components for brand new ones).

Things like plastics, bottles, caps, and some of the rubber pipes and tubes are all the kind of things that could do with some gentle TLC here and there, nothing too drastic and all things that can be done in situe.

Depending on what the outcome of the garage inspection and MOT, will allow me to decide whether or not to continue cleaning as things come out and go back in, or to replace. But for now, already there’s a massive improvement in the impression when the bonnet comes up.

So for a couple of hours, that’ll do for now. It’ll be nice once it’s running and I can take it somewhere to deal with the bodywork. Apart from the odd small panel being re-sprayed (primarily where the fuel cap is), it’s only the issue with the lacquer on the boot that I’d probably like to get fixed. Although today I did spot some light cracking on the front bumper, I’m not entirely sure what to do about that. Visuals aren’t exactly high in my list of things to do.

For now, that’s the last time I’ll be at the car before it’s getting moved so the next update will be once it’s in the garage (and I can really give the rundown of how much damage there is!).
